Price War Hits Dell’s Profit
'The company blamed “aggressive pricing in a slowing commercial market worldwide,” a frank assessment that ripped its stock.
Mr. Rollins acknowledged the company has “faced some recent challenges” but sounded a hopeful tone. “Dell remains one of the most successful companies in the world and a leader in our industry,” he said.
However, he admitted that “the competitive environment is more intense. Some competitors are stronger while others are willing to operate at low or no profitability. We are at the cusp of another round of industry consolidation. We are reasserting the direct model as a differentiator to confront the challenges head-on.”
Mr. Rollins pointed out that after Hewlett-Packard acquired Compaq, Gateway acquired eMachines, and IBM sold its PC division to Lenovo, their PCs lost market share, in contrast to Dell, which has continued to gain share.
