Hmm. “Sketchball” sounds dumb to me too, but that may be because I’m unused to “sketch” being used in the derogatory form apart from “sketchy.” However, I’m not sure I’d say that the reason you shouldn’t take Urban Dictionary seriously as a reference is that anyone can put anything in it; that’s true of Wikipedia as well, which I think should be taken very seriously. (Though no reference should be taken at face value without critical examination.)

Also, I find Urban Dictionary to be very useful for emergent terminology—it’s basically a proto-OED.

That said, I would certainly agree that the information obtainable on Urban Dictionary requires more than the usual amount of skepticism—but I think that’s to do with how people use the site, not with how the site itself operates.................
